Dear Valerie helps Romantic Ron

This week, it is all about Valentine’s Day. Valerie, our resident advice-giver, is here to help a hopeless romantic make up for a recent mistake.

Dear Valerie,

I believe there's somebody out there for everyone… and I think I might have found my special someone. However, my boyfriend is really upset with me because I recently forgot our anniversary. Valentine’s day is coming up, and I want to make sure I bring out his beautiful smile. Please, help me. How can I make it up to him?

Romantic Ron

Dear Romantic Ron,

It is perfectly normal for a couple to fight once in a while.  In fact, a fight can sometimes be the best thing for a relationship. You just need to see it as an opportunity to deepen the love and respect between you both. So, instead of worrying about what to say to your boyfriend right now, just show him that you’re the kind of man he can depend on and that can make him happy.

Having said that, you need to consider that a fight is not always about the one thing that led up to it. For example, in your case, the problem might not have been just forgetting the anniversary. Maybe he feels like he is not a priority in your life, and the fact that you forgot the anniversary might just have felt like yet another example of that.

So, if you really love him, you need to be more attentive to the things that are important to him. It sounds like she cares about special dates, so why don’t you create a shared calendar? That way, he can fill in all the special dates and you just have to make sure to check it every once in a while!

Making up from a fight can be difficult. It might be time to bring in the big guns! But it sounds like you already have your heart in the right place. A big Valentine’s day surprise might be just what you need to melt his heart into forgiving you for forgetting your anniversary.

If you need inspiration on what to do, try listening to him. Has he been talking about something he really wants? Maybe a weekend away somewhere romantic — as Audrey Hepburn would say, Paris is always a good idea! Or maybe he has been talking about trying some new restaurant… Go ahead and surprise him with a reservation! Think hard about your recent conversations. Is there anything he can’t stop talking about?

Make Valentine’s day all about him and I am sure you will see that beautiful smile before the night is over.

Hope this helps. Yours,
